<p>AI Bridge is Coder’s LLM gateway for auditing AI sessions, managing MCP servers, and enforcing policy across every AI tool your developers use.</p>

<p><a href="https://coder.com/blog/launch-dec-2025-ai-bridge">Since beta</a>, AI Bridge has expanded in three major ways:</p>

<h2>Agent Boundaries is GA: Enforceable runtime controls for autonomous agents</h2>

<p>Agent Boundaries brings process-level network controls and audit logging to AI agents running inside Coder workspaces.</p>

<p><strong>What’s new in GA:</strong></p>

<ul>
<li>  <strong>Centralized, queryable audit logs</strong> for every agent HTTP request.</li>
<li>  <strong><code>Landjail</code> mode</strong>, which runs without requiring permission changes — making Boundaries usable in far more environments.</li>
<li>  <strong>Documented rules authoring</strong>, so admins can confidently define granular network policies without guesswork.</li>
</ul>

<p>Agent Boundaries treats AI agents as untrusted actors. Instead of relying on brittle prompts or unusable sandboxes, it enforces runtime policies that strictly define what agents can access or export. This approach helps mitigate risks like prompt injection, data exfiltration, and unintended destructive actions by enforcing network‑level controls, not best‑effort instructions.</p>

<h2>Introducing the AI Governance Add-On</h2>

<p>Starting with Coder 2.30, we’re introducing the <strong>AI Governance Add-On</strong> for <a href="https://coder.com/cde/premium">Coder Premium</a> customers, designed to help teams move AI agents from individual experiments to a shared, production-grade platform capability.</p>

<p>Most teams begin with AI agents running locally or per-user. That works until agents need access to real code, real infrastructure, or to run at scale. The AI Governance Add-On gives platform and security teams architectural, auditable controls over AI usage without disrupting developer workflows.</p>

<p>With the add-on, teams can:</p>

<ul>
<li>  <strong>Audit developer prompts, agent tool calls, and network activity</strong> for AI coding agents.</li>
<li>  <strong>Attribute AI usage</strong> to teams, users, and projects, rather than personal API keys.</li>
<li>  <strong>Run long-running or automated agent workflows</strong> in managed infrastructure.</li>
<li>  <strong>Safely enable AI</strong> in sensitive or regulated codebases.</li>
</ul>

<p>The add-on includes:</p>

<h2>Also shipping in Coder 2.30: Faster workspace starts for Terraform templates</h2>

<p>Coder 2.30 includes a performance improvement that significantly speeds up workspace starts for templates that use Terraform modules. Instead of downloading modules every time a workspace initializes, Coder now captures them once when a template version is created and reuses that exact set on every subsequent start.</p>

<p>The result is faster, more predictable workspace startup, especially for platform teams managing shared templates or teams with complex Terraform-based setup. Each template version consistently uses the same module code, so workspace behavior is easier to reason about and less prone to unexpected changes.</p>

<p><strong>Breaking change to note:</strong> Previously, modules—particularly those pointing to a Git branch—could update automatically on workspace start. Now, module updates require creating or re-importing a new template version.</p>

<p>Most coding agents today run on vendor infrastructure or individual laptops. That works until you need real security and governance. Agents running in fragmented environments can overreach, be prompt-injected, or operate without meaningful oversight. </p>

<h2><strong>New Coder platform features that power-up human + AI workflows</strong></h2>

<p>Alongside the new AI execution layer, we released platform improvements that make it easier to add tools, secure integrations, and govern workflows inside your infrastructure.</p>

<h3>Plug-and-Play AI: New Coder Registry Modules</h3>

<p>Consider this - a <a href="https://www.atlassian.com/blog/state-of-teams-2024">recent study from Atlassian</a> found that enterprises lose billions of hours every year to fragmented tools and manual setup. Developer environments face the same problem: every team needs custom workflows, but building and maintaining them from scratch leads to drift, inconsistent access, and slow onboarding. </p>

<p>The Coder Registry solves this by letting platform teams drop vetted modules into any workspace with just a few lines of Terraform. Instead of reinventing the wheel or maintaining scattered scripts, teams get a composable, governed way to share and adopt integrations across the organization.</p>

<p>Over the last six months, we’ve released a wave of new modules for popular AI tools, including:</p>

<li><strong>Amp</strong>: Sourcegraph’s code search and analysis via the Amp CLI.<br></li>
<li><strong>Copilot</strong>: GitHub Copilot CLI with task reporting in the Coder UI.<br></li>
<li><strong>And a bonus community module, CopyParty</strong>: A compact file server with resumable uploads and media indexing.</li>
</ul>

<h3>Scoped API Keys: Least Privilege by Default to Improve AI Agent Security</h3>

<p>AI agents and automation tools often rely on user-generated API keys that grant broader permissions than they need. A developer creates a key for one task, but that key has access to provision workspaces, modify templates, and view all user data. This creates risk and makes audits harder for security teams that can’t track what each agent actually needs versus what it could access.</p>

<p>Scoped API keys solve this by  limiting access to only the required actions and resources. They reuse Coder’s RBAC system, improve security for automation, and help teams adopt agents with confidence instead of overprovisioned access.</p>

<p><a href="https://coder.com/docs/admin/provisioners#scoped-key-recommended">Create scoped keys</a> using the CLI or API.</p>

<h3>OAuth 2.1 Tokens: Modern Auth for Modern Agents</h3>

<p>Static tokens are difficult to rotate, lack fine-grained scoping, and do not align with emerging AI integration standards. When an agent needs access to Coder, most teams generate a long-lived personal access token. If that token leaks, you have to revoke it manually, rotate it everywhere it&#39;s used, and hope nothing breaks. There&#39;s no automatic expiration, no refresh flow, and no standard way to limit what the token can do.</p>

<p>To solve this, Coder now issues scoped, revocable OAuth 2.1 tokens. This improves security and interoperability and prepares teams for modern agent protocols like MCP. Tokens expire automatically, can be refreshed without user intervention, and follow industry-standard flows that security teams already understand. <a href="https://coder.com/docs/admin/integrations/oauth2-provider">Configure OAuth clients</a> as you would with any standards-based provider.</p>

<h2><strong>What’s next for AI development infrastructure?</strong></h2>

<p>Launch Week reinforced something we’re seeing across many organizations: modern development teams can’t rely on a laptop-centered workflow, especially as AI becomes part of daily work. The products and platform updates we released give teams a secure and consistent foundation for both builders and agents.</p>

<h2>New UI for configuring Organization Sync in Deployment Settings</h2>

<p>With this update, we’re making it easier to manage user assignments based on IdP claims. Previously, this required modifying server flags, but now admins can set up and adjust organization mappings directly in the UI. This update streamlines identity management, ensuring users are automatically placed in the right organizations without manual intervention.</p>


<h2>New Notification Type for Workspace Creation and Updates</h2>

<p>Receive alerts when developers create or update their workspaces, enhancing your oversight of workspace configurations. Learn how to enable notifications in <a href="https://coder.com/docs/admin/monitoring/notifications">our documentation</a>. </p>

<p>Through our partnership with DX, you can integrate these events with <a href="https://help.getdx.com/en/collections/3877479-platformx">PlatformX</a> to trigger developer experience surveys at the right moment. <h2>Clarified Active Users and License Consumption</h2>

<p>We&#39;ve addressed confusion regarding &quot;active users&quot; by differentiating between daily user engagement and license consumption. Administrators can now better track how user activity affects license usage, aiding in resource management. </p>

<h2>Registry Improvements</h2>

<p>The <a href="https://registry.coder.com/">Coder Registry</a> is home to a collection of templates and modules that help you create and extend Coder workspaces.</p>

<p>We&#39;ve made architectural improvements to enhance its reliability and performance, along with launching a <a href="https://coder.instatus.com/">status page</a> for better visibility. Additionally, we&#39;ve refactored many example templates to leverage modules, improving their flexibility and readability.</p>

Release Recap: Enhancing Oversight and Resource Management in Coder 2.19

<p>In collaboration with SlashData, Coder presents the <a href="https://coder.com/ebooks-and-reports/reports/state-of-development-environments-2025">State of Development Environments 2025 Report</a>, examining how organizations are evolving their development environments. Drawing on input from over 550 software professionals at large organizations (with at least 1,000 employees and 200 developers), the report uncovers trends and challenges shaping modern development practices:</p>

<ul>
<li>How long it takes platform teams and developers to <strong>provision development environments</strong></li>
<li>The level of <strong>autonomy and flexibility</strong> developers have while creating and using their environments</li>
<li>The <strong>biggest challenges</strong> teams face while creating and managing development environments</li>
<li>Companies’ <strong>plans for standardizing environments</strong> over the next three years</li>
</ul>

<p>While 78% of organizations are prioritizing standardization this year to boost efficiency, security, and collaboration, the report highlights persistent challenges. One major issue is the disconnect between administrators, who provision environments, and developers, who rely on these tools daily—administrators consistently report far higher satisfaction than developers.</p>

<h2>A Closer Look Into Enterprise Development Environments</h2>

<p>In Q4 2023, we <a href="https://coder.com/ebooks-and-reports/reports/cde-adoption-report">explored</a> how organizations use cloud development environments (CDEs). The study showed that while CDEs can improve developer experience, speed up delivery, and reduce cloud costs, many organizations aren’t taking full advantage of these benefits. Surprisingly, 95% of respondents claimed familiarity with CDEs, which raised questions about the depth of their understanding.</p>

<p>This report offers more insights into how companies are using development environments—including cloud development environments. </p>

<p>These benchmarks help teams evaluate their current setup and identify areas where platform engineering teams can bridge the gap between what these environments are capable of and what developers think they can do. </p>

<p>Our goal was to provide clarity and guidance for teams working to modernize their environments and improve collaboration.</p>

<h2>Key Insights for Platform Engineers</h2>

<p>Here are some of the key insights we walked away from this report with. In the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more in-depth looks and opinions on these findings—most importantly, our perspectives on how platform engineers can improve the developer experience by reducing friction with development environments.</p>

<h3>The Developer-Admin Disconnect</h3>

<p><strong>Administrators consistently rate development environments more favorably than developers</strong>, especially in areas like governance, usability, and tool access. This gap highlights differences in priorities and a lack of alignment between those who set up and manage environments and those using them daily.</p>

<p>If you’re unsure how developers in your organization view their setup, start by benchmarking feedback. <a href="https://getdx.com/?ref=coder.com">Tools like DX</a> can help identify areas for improvement and guide actions to improve satisfaction and productivity.</p>

<h3>Education is Key to Maximizing Cloud Adoption</h3>

<p>Organizations with large development teams favor commercial cloud development environments for scalability and collaboration. However, <strong>79% of respondents</strong> using cloud-hosted environments lack clarity about their technical features. This underscores the need for better education and guidance to help teams fully realize their benefits in the <a href="https://coder.com/ebooks-and-reports/ebooks/cloud-development-environment-maturity-model">implementation process</a>.</p>

<h3>Improving Setup Times—A Missed Opportunity?</h3>

<p>Only <strong>7% of organizations</strong> can create development environments in under an hour, while <strong>21% take more than two days</strong>. Despite this, only <strong>14% of respondents</strong> have plans to prioritize improving setup times.</p>

<p>This suggests many organizations may underestimate the <a href="https://coder.com/blog/the-dollars-and-cents-argument-for-cdes">productivity impact</a> of delays or the potential benefits of alternative configurations.</p>

<h3>Balancing Flexibility and Control</h3>

<p>Standardization improves security, speeds up provisioning, and provides greater control—but often limits developer autonomy and usability. Only <strong>10-19% of organizations</strong> achieve high levels of flexibility, enabling developers to experiment with configurations and tools.</p>

<p>CDEs offer a solution, delivering both control and flexibility without compromising the developer experience.</p>

<h3>VDI: A Fading Solution</h3>

<p><strong>More than half</strong> of respondents are considering Virtual Desktop Infrastructure as part of their standardization plans, despite its high cost and complexity often making it impractical for modern workflows.</p>

<p>Interestingly, VDI is more popular among those planning standardization in 1-2 years but less so among those with imminent plans, suggesting it loses favor as strategies take shape. While still common in enterprises, VDI may decline as <a href="https://coder.com/webinars/revolutionizing-developer-experience-the-modern-alternative-to-vdi-with-coder-and/register">modern alternatives gain traction</a>.</p>

<p>In Coder, <a href="https://coder.com/docs/admin/provisioners">external provisioners</a> are daemons that run outside the main server to handle workspace and template setup tasks. They offload work from the server and provide better isolation, scalability, and security.</p>

Previously, issues with tag assignments during imports could result in potential job misassignments. Administrators can now rely on uniform tag evaluations across all provisioning scenarios, reducing the need for manual interventions.</p>

<h3>Security Update: Key rotation</h3>

<p>We’ve implemented a new <a href="https://github.com/coder/internal/issues/52">key rotation system</a> to improve our security posture on a few authentication payloads that previously leveraged pre-shared keys, mainly for signing JWTs for various flows such as authenticating access to a workspace app. Prior to this there was not a straightforward way to rotate these keys. It’s possible during the upgrade process that some users could encounter some one-off errors if they’re in the middle of these authentication flows. The window for these errors is quite small and only exists during the rollout of the upgrade. Retrying should fix any issues encountered. The two flows affected are authenticating access to a workspace app and converting a built-in user to OIDC.</p>

<p>For those who wish to minimize any opportunity for disruption during these flows, we advise rolling out the upgrade during a period of low usage.</p>

Coder Premium includes everything our open-source Community plan offers – unlimited Workspaces, Templates, and users – along with <a href="https://coder.com/pricing#compare-plans">dozens of additional features</a> that extend user management, governance, scalability, and cost control.</p>

Unlike groups, users within an organization can hold roles that provide access to all resources specific to their organization without extending access to the broader Coder deployment.</p>


<p>For example, data science and developer platform teams can now coexist on a single Coder instance, each using different provisioners, tools, and infrastructure while remaining fully isolated.</p>

<p>With multi-organization access controls, enterprises can reduce the operational overhead and security risks of maintaining multiple decentralized Coder deployments. This release allows enterprises to scale more efficiently while preserving the integrity and security of each platform team. <h3>Custom roles</h3>


<p>Custom roles offer greater flexibility for managing contractors, service accounts, and unique use cases. You can create finely tuned permission sets with custom roles, allowing users to access only the resources and actions essential to their role within the Coder deployment. Whether managing contractors, auditors, or automated pipelines, custom roles help reduce risk and ensure compliance by adhering to the principle of least privilege.</p>

<h3>Resource quotas per organization</h3>

<p>With the introduction of resource quotas per organization, Coder now allows quotas to be set at the organization level rather than just at the group level. This offers better visibility and control over each platform team’s resource usage. This feature also enables chargeback tracking for Coder administrators, allowing infrastructure costs to be directly attributed to each organization’s budget holders. <h2>New for 2.16.0: Updates to Notifications, including Teams and Slack Betas</h2>

<p>Notifications have reached Beta in 2.16.0 for all users. In addition to the <a href="https://coder.com/blog/release-recap-2-15-0">notifications introduced in 2.15.0</a>, we’ve added summary reports to aggregate build failure events on your templates. This will help administrators asynchronously diagnose transient errors without requiring users to file support tickets. We’ve also opened beta support for notification delivery in Microsoft Teams and Slack workspaces. </p>

<p>Later this year, we’re planning to introduce custom notifications with delivery directly into the IDE.  This will open a new source of visibility into workspace health and critical time-sensitive events for developers. <p>We’re also thrilled to announce the first release of <a href="https://github.com/coder/envbuilder">Envbuilder</a>, an open-source project inspired by an idea from our co-founder, Kyle Carberry. Envbuilder leverages the <a href="https://containers.dev/implementors/spec/">open Dev Container standard</a>, allowing developers to manage their own dependencies and environments without needing platform team intervention. For example, developers can pull in tools that are already approved from sources like <a href="https://jfrog.com/artifactory/">Artifactory</a>, reducing reliance on platform teams. <h3>Use <code>aicommit</code> and never write commit messages again</h3>

<p>To help engineers spend more time writing code and less time writing commit messages, Coder Co-founder and CTO Ammar Bandukwala created <code>aicommit</code>: a small CLI tool that writes commit messages for you. Simply install the tool, provide an API token, and <code>aicommit</code> to generate a message based on your changes. </p>

<p>By request of the Coder community, we now support the Cursor AI Code Editor with a module in our registry. The module uses our <a href="https://github.com/coder/vscode-coder">VSCode Desktop extension</a> under the hood, so no extra configuration is required. To use Cursor in your Coder workspaces, just add the module and connect.</p>

<h2>From ClickOps to GitOps: the <code>coderd</code> Terraform Provider</h2>

<p>The new <code>coderd</code> Terraform provider allows teams to manage their Coder deployment declaratively in Git, bypassing traditional manual CLI/API scripting. This enables enterprises to:</p>

<li><strong>Improve template quality</strong>: Achieve automated testing of infrastructure and workspace configurations in CI/CD; reduce the risk of human error by reducing manual operations.</li>
<li><strong>Ensure compliance</strong>: Vet Coder templates against governance engines like Open Policy Agent to comply with strict internal tooling policies.</li>
<li><strong>Improve developer &amp; admin experience</strong>: Democratize visibility of templates so devs can recommend improvements via PRs, saving admin time and delivering a more transparent DevEx.</li>

<h2>Stay in the loop with experimental email and webhook notifications</h2>

<p>If you&#39;re not constantly checking the Coder dashboard, you might miss important, time-sensitive updates about workspace activity, such as failed builds. To help manage Coder deployments more effectively at scale, Coder now offers native email notifications and webhooks to alert developers and admins to critical events. These notifications cover key scenarios like template and user changes, build failures, and workspace deprecations or dormancy.</p>


<p>Notifications are in experimental mode for now (starting with version 2.15.0) and must be enabled using a feature flag. Administrators will need to configure an SMTP or Webhook target to activate notifications across the deployment. Users can tailor their notifications in their account settings. <a href="https://coder.com/docs/admin/notifications">Learn more about enabling notifications here</a>.</p>

<h3>Welcome nhooyr/websocket!</h3>

<p>ICYMI, we recently announced on <a href="https://coder.com/blog/websocket">our blog</a> that Coder has officially adopted the nhooyr/websocket library into our open-source family. Our team will continue to maintain it as an open-source project, permissively licensed under the Coder Github organization.</p>

<p>nhooyr/websocket is a minimal, idiomatic, and high-performance WebSocket library for Go. Its quality is demonstrated by <a href="https://pkg.go.dev/golang.org/x/net/websocket">an official recommendation from the Go Authors</a> and a long list of dependents, including <a href="https://github.com/traefik/traefik">Traefik</a>, <a href="https://github.com/hashicorp/vault">Vault</a>, and <a href="https://github.com/cloudflare/cloudflared">Cloudflare</a>.</p>

<h3>Introducing wush, the secure P2P file transfer tool</h3>

<p>We’re committed to delivering high-performance networking innovation to the open-source community. In support of this vision, we’re happy to introduce <a href="https://github.com/coder/wush">wush</a>: an efficient method of peer-to-peer file transfers based on the same networking layer used in our core product.</p>

<p>Most CLI file transfer tools are limited by slow speeds over relay servers, trust-based authentication through a third party, and limited applications outside of simple file transfer. We sought to utilize the modern advancements in userspace networking, brought about by <a href="https://tailscale.com/">Tailscale</a>, to create a tool that could solve all of these problems. <h2>New From Coder: A Deterministic Time Testing Library for Go</h2>

<p>In case you missed it, Coder Principal Engineer Spike Curtis released a new open-source time-testing library for Go last month. The new project, <a href="https://github.com/coder/quartz" target="_blank">Quartz</a>, allows developers to create repeatable, deterministic, and fast unit tests by mocking out calls that query or depend on real time. Quartz addresses common issues such as race conditions and the need for specific test timing, making writing reliable and efficient tests easier. Quartz aims to improve the developer experience by reducing flaky tests and enhancing test reliability.</p>
