Market Guidance on the Benefits of CDEs
It’s more important than ever for teams to make it easier for developers to get started, keep their work secure, and work together without friction—especially as software projects become larger and more complex. According to Gartner®, “AI engineering and cloud-native development workflow complexity make it hard to improve developer productivity, streamline the onboarding experience and secure the software supply chain.”
There’s a better way forward. In its new Market Guide, Gartner explains that software engineering leaders can use cloud development environments to address these challenges for their teams.
Here are three key benefits organizations can achieve from CDEs:

Improved Productivity
CDEs remove the time-consuming process of setting up a development environment. In the report, Gartner notes that cloud development environments (CDEs) provide remote, ready-to-use access to a cloud-hosted development environment with minimal effort for setup and configuration. The ability to switch environments makes it less laborious to get started on new projects.

Stronger Security
CDEs mitigate security threats by codifying secure software development guidelines and enforcing the necessary guardrails to prevent source code leaks or attacks on delivery pipelines. They also protect organizations by enabling developers to use vetted tools and libraries (including open-source software) instead of shadow IT tools and unapproved open-source software.

Support for Multiple Personas
The benefits CDEs provide extend beyond developers. They give data teams, scientists, and engineers shared access to the tools and computing power they need, all in one place. Since environments are centralized, different roles can collaborate, share resources, and work across projects without dealing with setup issues or compatibility roadblocks.
